Researchers Pinpoint Array Of Obesity Genes

guanyuying 12 October, 2010 05:25 General Permalink Trackbacks (0)
SUNDAY, Oct. 10 (HealthDay News) -- Scientists have found genes that appear to play a role in the propensity for obesity. The findings are reported in two new studies published in the Oct. 10 online edition of Nature Genetics. In one report, researchers say they have identified 18 gene variants linked to obesity and confirmed the involvement of 14 others. In a second report, the same group of researchers say they have identified 13 gene variants that appear to direct fat to the belly or thighs. "We have made a big leap forward in identifying new gene variations that contribute to the susceptibility to obesity and susceptibility to store fat more on your hips or more on your waist," said researcher Ruth Loos, a group leader in the Genetic Aetiology of Obesity Program in the MRC Epidemiology Unit at the Institute of Metabolic Science, in Cambridge, U.K. Loos cautioned that these genes cannot be used to predict whether an individual will become obese or not. Right now, they have identified genes linked to obesity, but exactly how these genes work in developing a vulnerability to obesity isn't known, she added. "But if we know the biology, perhaps we can invent a more effective preventive strategy. Maybe we can identify proteins that we can target with drugs," Loos said. "It's going to take years before these new discoveries will develop into new interventions." In addition, having these gene variants doesn't mean that an individual is definitely going to be obese. "The prediction is not much better than just flipping a coin," Loos said. For the first study, Loos and her colleagues looked at data from 46 gene studies that had identified genes linked to body mass index (or BMI, a measurement that takes into account height and weight). Together, these studies included 123,865 people. In this meta-analysis, which is a review of previously published studies, Loos' group was able to find 18 new genomic regions associated with BMI, and confirm 14 regions that had been identified before. Loos noted that the more of the gene variants a person has, the greater their susceptibility to obesity. These variants are inherited from both your mother and your father, so you can have as many as 64 variants, she explained. The average person has about 28 to 32 of these variants; about 2 percent of the population carries more than 38 variants and 2 percent of the population carries less than 21, Loos added. These genes appear to act in the brain, Loos said. "This suggests that these genes may act through increased food intake -- maybe appetite and reward," she said. "But you still need the environment on top of that to really trigger that susceptibility." Over the past 30 years, the obesity epidemic has exploded, Loos pointed out. "Our genes haven't changed, our environment has changed," she stated. However, Loos added, there are several genes whose variants are linked to extreme obesity. In a second meta-analysis, Loos and colleagues looked at 32 genome-wide studies for genes associated with hip-to-waist ratio, which is a measure of fat distribution. These studies included 77,167 people. The researchers identified 13 genes associated with hip-to-waist ratio that had not been identified before. Among these genes, seven had a stronger effect on women than men. These findings show that there are sex-specific genes that regulate fat distribution. Moreover, these genes and the ones in the first study don't overlap, suggesting that different genes regulate BMI and fat distribution. The differences between where men and women store fat -- men on the waist, women on the thighs -- is likely genetically driven, Loos said. Obesity expert Dr. David L. Katz, director of the Prevention Research Center at Yale University School of Medicine, said "that there are genes associated with variations in human shape and size is no more surprising than genes associated with variations in eye color, hair color or skin pigment." Although finding genes associated with obesity is important for understanding the biology of obesity, these new findings have limited application in the current obesity epidemic, Katz said. "Let us by all means study our genes, and their associations with our various shapes and sizes," he said. "But let's not let it distract us from the fact that our genes have not changed to account for the modern advent of epidemic obesity -- our environments and lifestyles have."

Virgin Galactic Ship Achieves Manned Free Flight

The more than 370 people who've put down deposits on what they hope will be the first commercially available space flight tickets got a step closer to zero-gravity on Sunday when a Virgin Galactic's ship achieved its first manned free flight and successfully glided into land. The VSS Enterprise was released from its mothership at an altitude of 45,000 feet piloted by Pete Siebold, assisted by Mike Alsbury as co-pilot. The aim was to achieve a clean release of the spaceship from its mothership and for the pilots to free fly and glide back and land, both of which were accomplished, the company said. In a release, Siebold, said "The VSS Enterprise was a real joy to fly, especially when one considers the fact that the vehicle has been designed not only to be a Mach 3.5 spaceship capable of going into space but also one of the worlds highest altitude gliders." "First flight days are always extraordinary," Stu Witt, General Manager of the Mojave Air and Space Port, said in a release. "This team effort by so many has been punctuated by a successful first test flight, and now everyone seeking a ride to space is a giant step closer." "This is a critical milestone in Virgin Galactic's test program and a great day for the commercial spaceflight industry," John Gedmark, Executive Director of the Commercial Spaceflight Federation, said in a release. "At the end of the day, getting hardware off the ground is what it's really all about. Today's SpaceShipTwo test flight marks another key milestone towards opening the space frontier for private individuals, researchers, and explorers." The Virgin Group began serious efforts at commercial space flight in 2004. Thus far 370 customers have put down deposits totaling $50 million. Flights on the commercial space liner are expected to cost $200,000 each. Passengers will have to undergo a three day preparation before their trip, including medical checks, bonding, and g- force acclimatization. By Elizabeth Weise

It's Not About 'Skins Winning; It's About Packers Sinking

guanyuying 12 October, 2010 05:23 General Permalink Trackbacks (0)
LANDOVER, Md. -- The one play that perhaps showed the cumulative result of the current physical devastation being endured by the Green Bay Packers happened with a few minutes left in the game. It was a defining moment for what's currently wrong with the Super Bowl favorites. Washington tight end Chris Cooley made a short catch with about three minutes left, and it should've resulted in a routine tackle. It didn't. One Packer bounced off. Then another. Cooley was a bull, and the Packers were tourists in Pamplona. A third Packer pin-balled and then one more. Cooley's hard run led to a 30-yard gain and put Washington in field goal range. The kick tied the score at 13 and sent the game into overtime. Washington eventually won 16-13 on a Graham Gano field goal from 33 yards. But the story isn't the Redskins. The story is Green Bay. The Packers are disintegrating right before our eyes in a haze of injuries and mental lapses that are threatening their season. There was a Philadelphia-Washington game in 1990 that resulted in so many players hurt it was called the Body Bag Game. Redskins-Packers wasn't as bloody, but it was close. Packers tight ends Donald Lee (shoulder stinger) and Jermichael Finley (knee) were sidelined. It got so bad at that position, Mark Chmura was ready to vacate the hot tub and suit up. Green Bay also lost linebacker Clay Matthews (hamstring), linebacker Ryan Pickett (ankle) and defensive back Derrick Martin (ankle). It's no wonder Cooley was able to dance through Green Bay's defense with such ease. The defensive roster was pummeled. Perhaps the biggest injury was to quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The Packers said he suffered a concussion in the final seconds of overtime. It's quite possible Rodgers will have to miss a game. "I haven't seen anything like this before," Finley said of the injuries. That's the physical part. Then there's the mental part, and that might be the biggest problem of all with Green Bay. The late-game collapses are leading to questions about the Packers' mental toughness and the capabilities of the coaching staff. The Packers are jumping out to quick starts and dominating opponents but failing to close them out. It's a constant issue that hasn't gone away. "This game was just like the Chicago game," said defensive back Tramon Williams, speaking of the Packers' 20-17 loss to the Bears last month. "We controlled the game and then everything went sour." "We could have beat [the Redskins] on many different occasions," he said. "We're giving away games. We're a lot better than these guys. It's frustrating because we shouldn't be losing these games." The Packers coaches have been unable to decode the problem and as a result a team that should be 4-1 (at worst) is just above .500. McCarthy said he isn't thinking about the heavy preseason Super Bowl expectations (expectations the Packers embraced). He may not be, but many others are. "We're going to get back, we're going to get our team healthy, and we're going to get our guys ready to play next week at home against Miami," said McCarthy. "I answer expectation questions all the time. Our expectation is week to week." The Redskins have the opposite issues. They start off sluggish but somehow hang around. The fact that this team, which has a bad offensive line (the Packers sacked Donovan McNabb five times), no elite wide receiver and no elite running back (Clinton Portis is hurt), is tied for first place in the NFC East is a credit to McNabb and a solid Washington defense. The Redskins are easy to figure out. The Packers are different story. But someone in Green Bay had better do it. Fast.

Democratic Struggles Could Cost Handful Of Contests

guanyuying 12 October, 2010 05:21 General Permalink Trackbacks (0)
By Chris Cillizza Washington Post Staff Writer Sunday, October 10, 2010; 7:25 PM Rick Snyder may be House Democrats' biggest nightmare. This Story Live Q&A, 11 a.m. ET: Live Fix with Chris Cillizza Democratic struggles could cost handful of contests 2010 Midterm Elections: The Primaries As midterms near, Obama works to re-ignite 2008 enthusiasm in Philadelphia Alaska Sen. Murkowski embraces new outsider status with write-in campaign Top Obama adviser questions foreclosures freeze View All Items in This Story View Only Top Items in This Story The Michigan Republican, a former head of the Gateway computer company, is running way ahead of Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero (D) in the Wolverine State's gubernatorial race. (A poll released Sunday gave him a 20-point advantage.) Such a wide margin for Snyder creates the potential for a down-ballot sweep that could wash out Democrats' chances in two hotly contested House districts. State Rep. Gary McDowell (D) and surgeon Dan Benishek (R) are competing for retiring Democratic Rep. Bart Stupak's seat in the 1st District - a swing district in northern Michigan that Barack Obama won with just 50 percent two years ago. Rep. Mark Schauer (D) is trying to beat back former congressman Tim Walberg (R) in a rematch of their 2008 contest for a tossup seat in the 7th District, where Obama won with 52 percent. With Snyder leading Bernero by such a wide margin, there is considerable concern among Democratic strategists that a poor performance at the top of the ticket could make just enough difference to sway the 1st District and 7th District races against them. The situation in Michigan is the most extreme - but far from the only - example of how Democratic struggles at the top of the ticket could well cost the party a handful of congressional contests on Nov. 2. "Getting tied to an unpopular ticket hurts with swing voters, but it also makes it even harder to rally your base and get them to turn out," said one Democratic consultant who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the problem candidly. The trouble for Democrats is most acute in the Midwest. In Illinois, Gov. Pat Quinn (D) is running behind state Sen. Bill Brady (R), while the Senate race between state Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias (D) and Rep. Mark Steven Kirk (R) is a dead heat. A loss by Quinn or Giannoulias would bode poorly for the likes of Reps. Debbie Halvorson (D) and Phil Hare (D) and could endanger what should be a Democratic open-seat pickup in the 10th District. In Wisconsin, both Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, the Democratic nominee for governor, and Sen. Russell Feingold (D) are trailing their Republican opponents. And it's no accident that Republicans are feeling more bullish about their chances of beating Rep. Steve Kagen (D) and winning the open 7th District seat being vacated by retiring Rep. David R. Obey (D). Ditto in Iowa, where Gov. Chet Culver (D) appears headed for a drubbing at the hands of former governor Terry Branstad (R) - a defeat that, if it's large enough, might sweep Reps. Leonard L. Boswell (D) and Dave Loebsack (D) out of office. The top-of-the-ticket situations are similar in Ohio and Pennsylvania, each of which has a contested gubernatorial and Senate seat on the ballot. Republicans are running well in all four contests - although the Ohio governor's race looks to be very close - and a strong showing at the top of the ticket could jeopardize as many as 11 Democratic-held House seats in the two states. There are, without question, a handful of places where the top-of-the-ticket's performance is likely to aid targeted House Democrats. The best example is New York, where state Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo (D) is headed for an easy victory over controversial - to say the least - businessman Carl Paladino (R) in the governor's race, while Sens. Charles E. Schumer (D) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D) are expected to cruise to victories as well. That Democratic tide should aid Empire State incumbents in tough races, such as Reps. Bill Owens, Michael Arcuri and John Hall. Wins by all three would put a damper on Republicans' House majority hopes. In the broad view, however, it's clear that the struggles of Democratic gubernatorial and, to a lesser extent, Senate candidates have the potential to make an already difficult election that much tougher for House incumbents trying to find a way to win. In close races - and there will be lots of them at the House level in 22 days' time - a few hundred votes can make all the difference. And that's where a stronger-than-expected (or weaker-than-expected) than expected showing at the top of the ticket will matter - in a major way.

Actress Laura Dern and singer Ben Harper are reportedly ending their five-year union. The folk-rock singer served the "Jurassic Park" actress divorce papers on Friday afternoon, according to TMZ. The Grammy-winning artist has cited irreconcilable differences, and the website reports that although Harper and Dern have been living together recently, the singer claims the pair separated in January. Harper is looking to split custody of their two children. Harper and Dern got hitched in a Los Angeles mansion in 2005 surrounded by 150 guests. Although Harper will be heading back into the singles scene, the musician told MTV News in 2006 that he would love for future couples to use his music as the soundtrack to their nuptials. "I hope in the long term, a hundred years from now, someone might be walking down the aisle to it. That would mean a lot to me," the rocker admitted of the track, "Happy Ever After in Your Eyes," from his seventh LP, Both Sides of the Gun. Harper dropped the album months after he walked down the aisle with Dern. In addition to the changes in his personal life, Harper has some new projects bubbling on the professional front as well. The musician just released the album As I Call You Down as a member of the group Fistful of Mercy, alongside musicians Joseph Arthur and son of the Beatles' George Harrison, Dhani Harrison. The trio will also kick off a tour in November, which includes sold-out stops in Seattle, San Francisco and Washington, DC. The group is also slated to play New York's famed Apollo Theater, a venue that Harper is familiar with from a 2004 gig with the Blind Boys of Alabama.

Roger Clemens Pleads Not Guilty At Arraignment

guanyuying 02 September, 2010 05:32 news Permalink Trackbacks (0)
Reporting from Washington — More than two years after Roger Clemens told Congress that he had never taken steroids or human growth hormone, the seven-time Cy Young Award winner pleaded not guilty Monday in federal court to charges that he lied about the alleged doping. Clemens uttered only one phrase to U.S. District Judge Reggie B. Walton: "Not guilty, Your Honor." He had arrived at the courthouse more than four hours before his 2 p.m. arraignment. Walton set a trial date of April 5. The charges stem from a 2007 report on doping in baseball that alleged Clemens had used anabolic steroids on multiple occasions in 1998, 2000 and 2001, and human growth hormone on multiple occasions in 2000. Clemens repeatedly told lawmakers and congressional staff that the allegations in the report were false. On Aug. 19, he was indicted on three counts of making false statements, two counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice. The indictment does not offer specific proof that Clemens used the banned drugs but alleges that he lied to Congress when he rebutted the claims of others who said he had used the substances. Federal prosecutors said Monday that they have agreed to provide the defense with a 34-page master index of evidence, computer disks and "scientific evidence." Clemens, 48, pitched for the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees and Houston Astros. In 23 seasons, he was an 11-time All-Star who had 354 victories; 4,672 strikeouts; and a 3.12 earned-run average. His statistics would make him a cinch for the Hall of Fame when he is eligible in 2013, but a conviction related to the steroid scandal would cast doubt on his accomplishments. If convicted, he faces up to a $1.5-million fine and 30 years in prison, though under federal sentencing guidelines he is more likely to face a sentence of 15 to 21 months. A status hearing on the defense's review of the evidence was set for Dec. 8, with a preliminary hearing on the case scheduled for March 28. Former San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds has been charged with obstruction of justice and lying to a federal grand jury when he testified in 2003 that he had never knowingly used steroids. His trial is scheduled to begin March 21. The allegations in the report were based largely on statements from Clemens' former trainer, Brian McNamee, who cooperated with investigators in exchange for assurance that he would not be prosecuted. McNamee also produced needles, gauze pads and syringes that he said were used to inject Clemens. In February 2008, Clemens repeatedly denied the allegations in sworn testimony at a public hearing of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and in a deposition with congressional staff. In both instances, he testified voluntarily. "Let me be clear," Clemens said at the hearing. "I have never taken steroids or HGH." Clemens was offered a plea deal before his indictment was handed down, but he declined the offer. "I never took HGH or steroids," he wrote in a Twitter message hours after the indictment was made public. "And I did not lie to Congress."

Chile Mine Owners Ask For Forgiveness After Collapse

guanyuying 01 September, 2010 04:28 General Permalink Trackbacks (0)
CEO of the San Esteban mining group, Alejandro Bohn, said he "must ask forgiveness" for the "pain" caused.

Drilling work to rescue the miners has begun, but officials believe it could take three to four months.

A team of Nasa experts advised officials to be honest with the miners and not to give them "false hopes".

The miners, who are 700m (2,300ft) underground, have been told it could take a long time to get them out of the San Jose mine, but have not been given dates.

The Nasa team, which includes a doctor, nutritionist, and engineer and a psychologist, arrived in Santiago after a request by the Chilean authorities. They are due to travel to the mine site on Wednesday.
'Terrible situation'

Speaking to a parliamentary committee, Mr Bohn said he sought forgiveness for the incident, three weeks after the mine collapsed.

"The pain caused by this unwanted and unforeseen situation means we must ask forgiveness for the anguish being felt at this time," Mr Bohn told a parliamentary mining committee looking into the incident.

"This is a terrible situation, and we hope that it will soon come to a happy end."

Last Thursday, a Chilean judge ordered the freezing of $1.8 bn in assets owned by San Esteban as future compensation for the miners' familes.

Relatives of miners have fiercely criticised San Esteban, accusing the company of ignoring safety guidelines. The owners deny the accusations.

Work on the relief shaft began on Monday in an attempt to free the men, who remain trapped in a refuge chamber of the mine, where they managed to take shelter after a rock collapse on 5 August.

Chilean President Sebastian Pinera says his government "has done and will continue to do everything humanly possible to rescue them alive."

U.S. Vows Help In Fight Against Congo Sexual Violence

guanyuying 30 August, 2010 04:33 new Permalink Trackbacks (0)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The United States will help any effort to bring to justice rebels accused in the "horrific" mass rape of women and children in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Wednesday.

Rebels from the Mai Mai militia and Rwandan Hutu FDLR, who occupied the town of Luvungi in North Kivu province from July 30 to August 3, raped and assaulted at least 154 civilians, according to U.N. figures.

"This horrific attack is yet another example of how sexual violence undermines efforts to achieve and maintain stability in areas torn by conflict but striving for peace," Clinton said in a statement.

"The United States will do everything we can to work with the UN and the DRC government to hold the perpetrators of these acts accountable, and to create a safe environment for women, girls, and all civilians living in the eastern Congo," Clinton vowed.

The United Nations adopted a resolution last year recognizing the importance of preventing and responding to sexual violence as a tactic of war against civilians.

Clinton said it was now time for member nations to go beyond that with specific steps to protect civilians against sexual violence and prosecute those who commit such atrocities.

The United Nations has a peacekeeping force of nearly 20,000 members in Congo. A U.N. spokesman said the peacekeeping force only heard about the incident in the eastern province more than a week after it happened.

The world body said Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was outraged by the attack and dispatched a top official to Congo on Tuesday. The United Nations did not spell out the precise mandate of the mission.
